Last
Word From the Dirt Summit
Bridging the
Gap in Communications
|
Robby Romero, UN Ambassador of Youth
for the Environment, musician, director and activist, was
among those beating the drum at the Earth Summit for
renewable energy. He uses Alaska as his litmus it's among
Earth's last wild frontiers, where our carelessness most
clearly shows up. Remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill over
a decade ago? Of the 28 species of sea life and wildlife
affected then, only two are on the recovery list. Alaska
may be a long way from South Africa, but then so is
Manhattan, and look what the assault on the Twin Towers
did to the value of the rand. An assault on nature,
wherever it occurs, carries a cost for us.
We asked Romero what we could do to, um, save the
world.
- Support
alternative energy resources, he says. Where you can,
opt for solar energy, for instance.
- Exercise
consumer choice your choice of the goodies that go
into your shopping basket is a powerful force. If you
know a corporation practices sustainable development,
choose their products first, for instance; or choose
locally-grown fresh produce over strawberries flown in
from English hothouses.
- Read labels.
Petrochemicals, the by-products of fossil fuels, are
present in many household products. Look for
alternatives.
"We need to move into a time of healing,² says
Romero. We have the technology and the wisdom."
- South Africa "Shape Magazine"
